LATEST BROWARD CAMPAIGN REPORTS:
BIG LOANS AND CHURCH OFFERINGS
by Michael Mayo
July 28, 2010
Broward Commissioner Sue Gunzburger has loaned herself
$100,000 to fend off the well-financed challenge of
former state senator Steve Geller.
Challenger Barbara Sharief has loaned herself $95,200
to battle establishment favorite Angelo Castillo in
the race for the southwest district seat vacated by
criminally-charged Diana Wasserman-Rubin.
Dale Holness, a candidate in the crowded field for
the central Broward seat formerly held by imprisoned
Josephus Eggelletion, has spent hundreds of campaign
dollars filling the offering plates of local churches.
And nearly a quarter of Broward Mayor Ken Keechl's
$200,038 in campaign spending to date has gone directly
to his own household. Keechl has made $49,600 in rent
payments to his registered domestic partner, Ted Adcock,
for a campaign headquarters in Wilton Manors that Keechl
co-owns.
At $3,100 a month since April 2009, Keechl's rent
expenses far exceed those of any other commission candidates.
(In interviews, Keechl has defended his spending as
legal and appropriate.)
These are among the tidbits culled from the latest
campaign finance reports for Broward commission races.
There's less than a month until the Aug. 24 primary,
and in many Democratic-dominated districts it amounts
to the final word on who becomes commissioner. ...
Not so quaint is the big bucks, mudslinging race between
Gunzburger and Geller.
Gunzburger has raised nearly $402,000, including the
$100,000 loan, and has spent $192,083 to date.
Geller has raised $195,144 and spent $132,152,
but that's not including the support he's getting from
two political committees that aren't bound by $500 contribution
limits. Those groups can orchestrate last-minute attack
ads and mailers.
Citizens For Ethical and Effective Leadership
has gotten $7,000 from Big Sugar. And Floridians For
A Stronger Tomorrow has raised $148,000 including $30,000
in recent contributions from gambling companies affiliated
with Mardi Gras Casino and its politically active executive
Dan Adkins.
As we head into the final weeks before the primary,
voters should brace for the worst.
