Since
we first elected Sue Gunzburger as our Broward County
Commissioner, she's worked hard to help us! Here are
just a few of her proven results:
LOWER
TAXES.
Sue repeatedly fought against property tax hikes on
the County Commission. The results: County property
tax millage rates have been slashed by 30% since 2000
-- and we've had NO County tax rate hikes over
the past 12 years. On top of that, the County
CUT spending by 10% this year.
PARKS
- HOLLYWOOD.
Sue secured $5 million in County funding to build the
Arts Park in Young Circle ... led the County’s effort
to improve TY Park by building the great new water park
and walking trails ... helped fund two public swimming
pools at the YMCA and in West Hollywood ... and added
new playground equipment at many local parks.
PARKS
- HALLANDALE BEACH.
Thanks to Sue's leadership as an environmentalist, the
County financed efforts which improved the Hallandale
Beach's Cultural Community Center, O.B. Johnson Park,
and Bluesten Park ... saved green/open space from future
development in Hallandale's Foster Park ... and relocated
and saved the Hallandale Beach Historic Old School House
and preserved the historic Curci House.
PARKS
- PEMBROKE PINES.
Sue led the County’s effort to improve CB Smith Park
with major renovations. She also secured funding for
Pembroke Pines’ Susan B. Katz Theater at the River of
Grass Arts Park.
BEACHES.
When hurricanes and storms washed away much of South
Broward’s beach sand, Sue secured the County funding
for the renourishment project which restored our beautiful
beaches throughout Broward. In addition to protecting
the beaches for our residents, this vital restoration
project also helps our community continue to attract
tourist dollars.
ETHICS
REFORM.
Sue has pushed for ethics reform for years at the County
Commission -- long before others even understood there
was a need for tougher restrictions on lobbying, gifts,
and other corruption problems. The Sun-Sentinel wrote
in 2001 that Sue is "a real reformer," explaining
that she is "out there fighting every week, demanding
that the County be more accountable. [She] wants insiders
to have less influence and the people to have more."
That's why former Sun-Sentinel political columnist Buddy
Nevins wrote that Sue has “been at the forefront of
trying to strengthen ethics laws at the County Commission.”

LIBRARIES.
Sue led the successful effort which built three County
branch libraries in Pembroke Pines:
Southwest Regional, Walter C. Young, and the South Regional
Library at BCC, and two branch libraries in Hollywood:
Stirling Road, and Hollywood City Hall Circle. She also
led the successful effort 5 years ago which entirely
renovated and improved the Hallandale Beach
Branch Library. Additionally, Sue blocked proposed funding
cuts to ensure these library branches stayed open this
year, along with the Hollywood Beach Library Reading
Room.
TRANSPORTATION.
Sue worked with County and Pembroke Pines city officials
to find a funding solution which successfully saved
and expanded Pembroke Pines’ community bus service.
WORKING
FAMILIES.
Sue obtained funding for Crystal Lake in Liberia to
be rebuilt into beautiful and affordable rental units,
including a club house, swimming pool and computer learning
center. Previously, as a Hollywood City Commissioner,
Sue was the driving force who successfully pushed for
creation of the Washington Park Day Care Center -- so
that working mothers had a safe, affordable place to
leave their pre-K children during the workday.
SAFETY.
Sue secured funding for Hollywood's Stirling Road Fire
Station. And, to protect our children, Sue ensured parks
bond money was used to help finance the life-saving
SWIM Central program at the Hallandale Municipal Pool.
Sue also had an automated crossing light installed on
Stirling Road so Orthodox Jewish families can safely
cross Stirling and walk to shul on sabbath without pushing
the button.
NOISE
BUFFERS.
Sue convinced the County to construct noise buffer walls
to reduce noise pollution for Lakes of Emerald Hills
residents living near the railroad tracks.
136th
AVENUE.
Sue led the fight for Century Village which kept 136th
Avenue in Pembroke Pines private and closed, ensuring
community safety by blocking dangerous through-traffic.
CIVIL
RIGHTS.
Since the early 1970s, Sue has been a dedicated feminist
who has campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment and
for protecting women's pro-choice rights. Sue has also
been active in the fight for LGBT equality. She was
a sponsor of ordinance which added sexual orientation
to the Broward County Human Rights Ordinance. Sue also
was the sponsor of Broward County's Domestic Partner
Ordinance -- and has demanded that contractors seeking
to do business with the County have inclusive equal
opportunity policies and provide domestic partner benefits.
Additionally, she is a strong supporter of expanding
opportunities for woman-owned and minority-owned businesses.
